This Privacy Policy explains how Localfile ("we", "us", "our") handles information when you visit our website and use the Localfile desktop application.
Summary
- Localfile is designed to process files on your device. We do not upload your documents to our servers for processing.
- This website does not use cookies or analytics scripts that track you across sites.
- If you purchase a license, payment is handled by Stripe and we store limited purchase-related data to deliver and support your license.
- Downloads are hosted on Cloudflare (R2 / CDN). Our website and backend endpoints run on Netlify.
Information we collect
Website access data (server logs)
Like most websites, our hosting providers may automatically collect basic access logs when you visit, such as IP address, user agent, referrer, requested pages, and timestamps. This information is typically used for security, abuse prevention, and debugging.
Anti-abuse and security signals
To protect the purchase and license-resend endpoints from abuse, we may process IP address and email address for rate limiting and fraud prevention. This may include short-lived, in-memory counters as well as standard provider logs.
Purchases and license delivery
When you purchase Localfile, payments are processed by Stripe. We receive and/or store limited information needed to:
- Confirm payment status
- Deliver your license key by email
- Provide support (including resending the license email)
- Prevent fraud and abuse
This may include your email address, a license identifier, and basic purchase status/metadata. We do not receive your full payment card details.
To support license delivery and resends, we store an email-to-license mapping in our backend storage (Netlify Blobs). This record may include your normalized email address, a generated license identifier, a Stripe Checkout session ID, and a creation timestamp. We encrypt these records at the application layer and restrict access to the storage.
We send transactional emails (such as license delivery/resend) using an email delivery provider (Resend). This requires sharing your email address and the email contents with that provider.
Support communications
If you contact us by email, we will receive the information you choose to share, such as your email address, message content, and any attachments.
Information we do not collect
- We do not ask you to create an account to use the app.
- We do not collect your files for processing.
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not run third-party analytics tracking scripts on the website.
How the app handles your files
File processing happens locally on your device. Inputs and outputs remain on your computer unless you choose to share them.
App network access (Wi‑Fi / internet)
Localfile can use your network connection (including Wi‑Fi) to check for updates and to download updates when you choose to install them. When the app checks for updates, our download host may receive standard request data such as your IP address, user agent, requested URL, and timestamps (similar to normal web server logs).
Update checks do not upload your files or document contents to us.
How we use information
We use information we collect to:
- Operate the website and deliver downloads
- Provide update checks and update downloads
- Provide licensing and purchase support
- Respond to support requests
- Maintain security and prevent abuse
Sharing and disclosures
We share information only as needed to operate the Service:
- Stripe (payment processing)
- Resend (transactional email delivery)
- Netlify (website hosting, serverless functions, and backend storage)
- Cloudflare (download hosting and delivery)
- When required by law, lawful requests, or to protect rights, safety, and security
Data retention
We retain purchase-related data only as long as necessary to provide licensing and support, comply with legal obligations, and prevent fraud. Support emails are retained as needed to respond and maintain service quality.
If you request deletion of purchase-related data, we may need to retain certain records to comply with legal, tax, accounting, or fraud-prevention obligations.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect the information we store, such as restricted access and encryption at rest where supported by our infrastructure. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
Your choices and rights
You may request deletion of purchase-related data we store (where feasible and subject to legal requirements) by contacting support.
You can also avoid sharing additional information by not emailing us attachments or sensitive content.
Children’s privacy
The Service is not intended for children under the age where parental consent is required under applicable law. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
International transfers
Depending on where you live, your information may be processed in countries where our providers operate. We take steps to use reputable providers and appropriate safeguards.
